    With the spate of delightful autumn weather we’ve enjoyed in Houston in recent weeks, it’s no wonder street activity has flourished in response. Today, a nice outdoor double-play took place within easy walking distance of each other.

    The neighborhood around the George R. Brown continues to evolve as rapid construction progress unfolds at the new Embassy Suites Houston Downtown. Why, by george, it actually looks like a hotel that’s on the verge of opening.

    Kathy Whitmire, the first woman voted into city office in Houston, is one of four honorees who will be enshrined in the Houston Hall of Fame exhibit tonight at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

    Whitmire was voted city controller in 1977 and served two two-year terms before being elected Houston’s first woman mayor and completing five terms from 1982 through 1991. Since leaving office, Whitmire has taught at Rice University, Harvard University and the University of Maryland and has lectured extensively to audiences throughout the world.

    The George R. Brown Convention Center will be hosting the prestigious 2010 National Business Travel Association’s International Convention & Exposition beginning Saturday and running through next Wednesday.

    More than 5,500 travel managers are expected to visit Houston to preview the newest industry tools, learn the latest trends, network and meet with more than 400 companies on the expo floor.

    Guest speakers for the members-only show include former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Sir Richard Branson of the Virgin family of airlines, and cycling champion Lance Armstrong.
