Houston First Corporation (HFC), Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera (HGO), DACAMERA, and Mercury Chamber Orchestra invite the public to kick off the holiday season in the Theater District at the 34th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony at Wortham Theater Center. At the center of this annual holiday tradition is the lighting of the spectacular, nearly 30-foot Christmas tree by The Nutcracker’s beloved Sugar Plum Fairy. In addition to the tree adorned with more than 19,000 dazzling lights, a giant Gingerbread House will captivate, tempt, and delight the little ones. The festivities include a live musical performance by the Brooke Wyatt Trio presented by DACAMERA. A quartet from Mercury Chamber Orchestra will provide entertainment as well.

For the young and young at heart, there will be holiday arts and crafts provided by the Houston Ballet and DACAMERA. Cookies and refreshments will also be available.

Santa himself will make an appearance and take photos with guests, whether they’ve been naughty or nice.

Wortham's box office will be open during the celebration, and guests can purchase tickets to upcoming shows. At approximately 12 p.m., the Houston Ballet’s Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker will wave her wand to light the Christmas tree.

Just outside Wortham, Fish Plaza (Texas Avenue entrance) has transformed into Sugar Plum Plaza, where visitors can experience the magic of the holidays and take a photo inside a beautifully crafted Santa’s Sleigh. Scattered across the plaza are giant interactive gift boxes, the perfect backdrop for that keepsake family photo. Sugar Plum Plaza is one of 12 holiday villages that make up City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic, presented by Shell Energy. The villages are open to the public and mostly free throughout the holiday season.
