Downtown Tunnels

Downtown's "underground" is a system of tunnels 20 feet below Houston's Downtown streets and more than six miles long.

Starting in the 1930s as a tunnel between two movie theaters, today Downtown's subterranean network connects 95 city blocks and has weekday workday food, shops and services. Only Wells Fargo Plaza and McKinney Garage on Main Street offer direct street access; all other tunnel entry points are from street-level stairs, escalators, and elevators inside private office buildings. Except for tunnels connecting Theater District venues to parking, tunnels close by 6 p.m. and aren't open weekends or evenings.
