The mural named "The Houston Collection" is about the butterfly effect. It is about how the world is interconnected and how small decisions can greatly impact people, society, and the planet. Yet, it also shows how "a butterfly flapping its wings," or simply the right action at the right place, can make a huge difference.
The mural addresses social and environmental issues such as habitat fragmentation and climate change. As such, this mural represents all 17 @unitednations Sustainable Development Goals.
It features eight emblematic butterflies from Texas and Houston showcased in a large entomologist box. These colorful, diverse butterflies are a tribute to the beauty of local nature and biodiversity and serve an educational purpose for the public as these local species are depicted with precision. From top to bottom you can admire: Danaus Plexippus (Monarch), Adelpha Fessonia (Mexican sister), Myscella Ethusa (Blue wing), Ascia Monuste (Great southern white), Doxocopa Pavon (Pavon), Phoebis Sennae (Cloudless giant sulphur), Doxocopa Laure (Laure) and Marpesia Petreus (Ruddy daggerwing).
Their representation in an entomologist box is also a vivid reminder of their fragility to climate change.
