Artist: Moon Papas

Designed and fabricated by Houston-based artist collective Moon Papas, Underpassage is funded by the Downtown Redevelopment Authority (DRA). 

This dynamic installation features lights mounted on bridge beams, casting dramatic, complementary colors and creating an ever-shifting visual landscape; stainless steel–wrapped columns reveal bold painted colors beneath; and touch-sensitive copper pads in select columns invite collaboration—audio experiences are triggered when multiple people complete the circuit simultaneously, fostering a playful sense of community. 

A key recommendation from the 2024 Pedestrian Lighting Study, funded by the Houston Downtown Management District, Underpassage directly addresses the immediate needs of an estimated 4 million annual pedestrians heading to Astros, Dynamo, and Dash games, as well as other locations across Downtown and East Downtown.
