Details
In 1836, brothers Augustus Chapman and John Kirby Allen founded the town of Houston at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. Shortly after, they advertised the area in the Telegraph and Texas Register as “handsome and beautifully elevated,” where settlers could enjoy “the sea breeze in all its freshness.” The Allen Brothers' descriptions may have been misleading, bu they were effective for attracting settlers and immigrants with the promise of a fresh start, cheap land, and economic opportunities.
Houston has steadily grown from a fledgling town in the Republic of Texas into the fourth-largest metropolis in the United States. Home Sweet Home explores the creation of a selection of Greater Houston subdivisions, neighborhoods, and cities by featuring historical maps, brochures, postcards, and photographs.
