In the 1950s, Mexican American children in Texas entered schools shaped by segregation and discrimination, where language barriers added to an already unequal educational system.
The Little School of the 400 tells the story of an innovative preschool program that used conversation, play, and 400 essential English words to prepare Spanish-speaking children for school. High school student Isabel Gonzales (Verver) helped bring this new approach to life as a teacher in the program. What began in one South Texas classroom grew into a statewide educational movement and helped lay important groundwork for the future of bilingual education in Texas.
