Best Breakfast and Brunch Spots in Downtown Houston

by Nicole Marin    January 1, 2017
While Downtown Houston has always had a number of dining options to choose from, over the past five years or so, there have been a lot of newcomers to the scene including some really great breakfast and brunch spots. Whether you’re looking for grab-and-go tacos, a healthy alternative or a nice boozy brunch, we’ve got you covered!
Batanga Tapas + Drinks- Enjoy a Latin brunch with options like stuffed French toast with guava cream cheese and whipped cream, chilaquilles, eggs Benedict and more! Don’t skip out on the mimosas and sangria which are both $3/glass. Saturday and Sunday beginning at 11 am
Hearsay Gastro Lounge- If you’re looking to elevate your brunch game, head straight to Hearsay Gastro Lounge and be sure to bring your appetite along! Choose from heartier options like the Brunch Burger and the Fried Chicken Biscuit Benedict, or sweeter options like Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Bourbon Pecan French Toast. Either way, you’ll want to bring a friend along so you can try multiple dishes! Brunch is served Sunday beginning at 10 am
La Calle- This cozy little restaurant serves authentic Mexican street tacos, tortas and tostadas with various ingredients that can be mixed and matched any which way you please. Other popular dishes include traditional menudo and pozole which are offered as all you can eat options every Saturday, Sunday and Monday. La Calle is open for Breakfast Monday-Friday at 7 am and on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 am
Local Foods- A beautiful aesthetic, an abundance of natural light and fresh food options make Local Foods the perfect spot for a midday brunch! Choose from one of their gourmet sandwiches, seasonal salads, fresh soups, a smoked salmon Benedict and much more. This location also has unique offerings including a raw bar featuring ceviche and oyster shooters. Open 10 am-8 pm daily, brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 am.
MKT Bar- MKT Bar’s brunch menu is something we look forward to at the end of every week. The hip urban eatery and bar offers a variety of waffles, eggs dishes, pizzas, sweets, coffees and teas! Need something on-the-go? Stop into the connected grocery store, Phoenicia Specialty Foods, for a la carte offerings like their Yummy! breakfast shawarma wrap! MKT Bar Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 9 am-3 pm.
The Moonshiners Southern Table + Bar- As the name implies, Moonshiners specializes in southern comfort food and warm hospitality- they even have a wall decorated with the phrase “Southern Hospitality” to prove it! Stop in for the brisket Benedict and sweet potato hash browns and stay to try one of their five different flavors of moonshine. Be warned- if you’re lucky enough to snag a seat on the patio, you’re likely to want to spend the whole afternoon there! Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 11 am-3 pm
Niko Niko’s- Enjoy a hassle-free, casual morning Greek picnic breakfast at this walk-up food kiosk nestled in downtown’s historic Market Square Park. Grab a falafel breakfast pita, baklava French toast, or authentic Greek yogurt and pull up a seat on the trellis or snag a spot on the lawn. Breakfast is served beginning at 7 am Monday-Friday and at 8 am on Saturday and Sunday.
Osso & Kristalla- This modern Italian tratorria is perfect for grab-and-go breakfast during the week or a casual Sunday brunch. Choose from a variety of homemade Italian pastries, keefer yogurt and breakfast sandwiches, as you sip on a nice strong coffee on their breezy outdoor patio. Breakfast is served beginning at 7 am Monday-Friday and brunch is served beginning at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday.
The District- Conveniently located in the middle of downtown, The District is a great spot for brunch! Their menu includes classic American breakfast options like a triple stack of pancakes, omelets or pork chops and eggs. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try their “breadfast” which includes a variety of ingredient options atop Tandoori Naan flat bread. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 am-3 pm.
The Honeymoon- This downtown gem is known for its high-quality coffee, delectably sweet treats, classic cocktails and an awesome weekend brunch! Options like the Breakfast BLT and smoked salmon can be ordered any day of the week, but if the sausage & biscuit topped with champagne gravy or the jambalaya risotto sound like they’d be more your speed, you’ll want to stop by on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Brunch isn’t complete without a cup of fresh-brewed, local Boomtown Coffee, a passion fruit mimosa or a pecan coffee milk punch. Breakfast is served beginning at 7 am Monday-Friday and Brunch is served beginning at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday.
Toasters- Toasters is a quaint little café in downtown's Warehouse District. Try their banana pecan frosted French toast, a delicious Philly cheese steak, shrimp and grits topped with Cajun pontchartrain sauce, or a southern chicken breast stuffed with cornbread dressing. Breakfast and lunch served daily from 8 am-2 pm.

Xochi- James Beard award-winning chef, Hugo Ortega, brings the distinct flavors of Oaxaca, the culinary capital of Mexico, to Houston through his newest restaurant, Xochi. And while the dinner menu is simply delectable, the brunch offerings are just as impressive! From egg dishes to grilled meats, the restaurant offers a bountiful buffet of breakfast and lunch items complete with an entire table dedicated to desserts. Did we mention there's also catrina face-painting for everyone? Brunch is served every Sunday from 11 am-2:30 pm.
