Tranquillity Park: Launching a New Phase
Work is underway on the first phase of improvements at Tranquillity Park, marking the beginning of a thoughtful refresh for one of Downtown Houston's most distinctive civic spaces.

First-phase improvements are underway
After Mayor John Whitmire announced the project in February, work has been progressing toward the completion of this initial phase, expected to wrap in June 2026.
These first investments are focused on improving the park's physical condition, creating a more welcoming experience and laying the groundwork for future activation.
Improvements include:
- New composite decking over three existing fountain basins
- Tree lighting throughout the park and its perimeter
- Repairs to pavers and select hardscape areas
- Removal of select walls to improve sightlines
- Power washing and general cleanup across the space
Together, these updates represent a cost-effective first step toward repositioning Tranquillity Park for a new era—while maintaining flexibility to adapt if longer-term design opportunities emerge.

Project spotlight: Rethinking the park's dormant fountains
A key focus of this phase is reimagining how the park's dormant fountains can support a new platform for human experience. By placing decking over three fountain basins, the project creates new opportunities for gathering, programming and public use without permanently altering the park's infrastructure.
Downtown Houston+ is also working with Houston Arts Alliance and the Mayor's Office of the Arts on civic art components that could bring new life to these features through shade, light and projection.

A coordinated civic effort
The project has required close coordination across public and civic partners, including the City of Houston, Houston Public Works, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Houston Arts Alliance, the Mayor's Office of the Arts, the Mayor's Office of Special Events, Hobby Center, and Downtown Houston+.
City Hall leadership has also played a direct role in helping facilitate decisions, approvals and coordination across the many partners involved.

Shaping the park's next chapter
This process has been intentional and collaborative, shaped by conversations with preservationists, historians, engineers, architects and community partners that protect the original vision for the park while moving it into a new era for all Houstonians.
As the improvements come online, Tranquillity Park's next chapter will continue to evolve based on how people use and respond to the relaunched space.
