A Downtown for Dogs

by Victoria Reid    October 26, 2023

Now that we’ve spent a year at home with our pups, it’s going to be extra difficult to go back to sneaking out of the house and leaving our four-legged friends behind. Fear not! We’re helping you say goodbye to the days of locking the door to sad puppy eyes with a whole slew of things to do with your pupper on your next trip Downtown!

Yappy Hour

Is Milo tired of being stuck in the house? Bring him to one of Downtown’s many dog parks to spice up his social life! With a pond, shade structures, washing stations and drinking fountains, Johnny Steele Dog Park at Buffalo Bayou Park is practically the gold standard of dog runs. The two-acre site provides plenty of opportunities to bask in the sun with your pooch.

Market Square Park is another paw-some spot to make some new furry friends! The neighborhood greenspace in the Historic District offers two areas, one for small dogs and one for large dogs, enclosed by a beautifully designed and lit crescent walkway. The dog run is named in memory of Houstonian and dog-lover Holly Anawaty, an active member of the community who lost her battle with brain cancer in 2006.

Of course the list doesn’t stop there! The award-winning Discovery Green wouldn’t be complete without a space dedicated to our BFFs. The Kinder Large Dog Run offers a space for the big boys to play, while the Joe Foster Small Dog Run is just for the little guys.

#SUNDAYFUNDAY

For the days perfect for the patio, grab the leash and head outdoors! Lots of #DTHOU hotspots welcome well-behaved dogs.

NIKO NIKO’S
Make your way to Market Square Park to grab some snacks for you and your pupper before finding a spot on the lawn for an afternoon of chillin’ out max.

SHAKE SHACK
As you dive face-first into a juicy burger and fries, treat your pooch to a ‘Pooch-ini’: a chilled doggy-treat, coated in peanut butter with dog-friendly vanilla custard.

BRAVERY CHEF HALL
Let Simba tag along on your next stop at this chic chef hall! The much-Instagrammed hotspot features a bevy of patio seating options, and swoon-worthy food and drinks!

LITTLE DIPPER BAR
Back with a brand-new sidewalk cafe and street patio, this whimsical wateringhole is a fun spot to kick back with an ice cold thirst-quencher with your best pal at your side.

SAINT ARNOLD BREWING COMPANY
The big, beautiful beer garden provides an expansive space for all the members of your crew to soak in the incredible view of the Downtown skyline, while knocking back the brewery’s latest release.

THE NASH
Snag a seat on the sidewalk patio of The Nash, located at The Star [the former Texaco Building], to dine alongside your dog. While you’re munching on tater tots and pizzas, your pup will be entertained by passersby who can’t resist an enthusiastic tail-wag.

Movie Nights

Who says movies are just for HOUmans?! Movie nights under the stars are welcome to friends of all kinds, especially the four-legged ones. Explore this seasons movies like Ratatouille, Bad Santa and more at Trebly and Market Square Park.
